Optimize Your Sites Properly

What does that even mean?
Well, in this case I am not talking about Search Engine Optimization. I have a series of posts on this blog about that topic.
I mean making sure that every one of your Social Sites has all the correct icons, widgets, and links, so that your audience can also find you on your other platforms easily.
So if someone stumbles across one of your videos, make it easy for them to find you on Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest.
If someone notices one of your tweets make sure that they can then find your blog.
If someone sees one of your Pins and wants to find out more about you can they easily find you right from Pinterest.
If someone is reading your blog make sure they can find you on every single one of your other platforms quickly and easily.

Integrate your sites correctly

You have got to integrate your sites to save time and to pass your messages around your platforms automatically.
Now this does need care and attention – what is suitable for one platform may not be suitable for another, nor do you want to be saying the same thing multiple times.
There are many, many ways to integrate and leverage the power of social media.
Your social sites should work seamlessly together to promote your online brand. So if you are going to be found everywhere make sure that your sites are active, interesting and useful to your target audience.

Create and curate great quality content

Know what your target audience want to hear about, so that means you need to do your research before you even begin.
Once you know what you need to talk about, create that content, but make it interesting by using multimedia content – images, and video as well as text – in your posts and updates. It is proven that posts with multimedia content do get more likes, shares, and comments.

Be consistent

People very quickly come to expect a certain level of communication from you and this is something that I myself do struggle with.
It is better to post once per week regularly maybe on the same day, rather than post multiple times one week and then nothing for 2 weeks – consistency, rather than frequency, is key.
Don’t forget if you do have a particularly inspirational week and the content is really flowing you can choose to schedule those blog posts, tweets or Facebook updates to be posted according to your schedule.

Share others content

Sharing is a very important part of social media. Do not be worried about sharing content, even if the content is from one of your competitors.
You will be noticed for doing this, and people will be grateful for you sharing relevant content, and you will be seen as an authority comparable to the people whose content you are sharing.

Build your community

It is sometimes difficult to build a community in the correct way. But before you start make sure your profiles are ready to be unleashed on the world, and are looking good.
Some sites are easier to grow than others – for example on Twitter, it is easy to go out and build large numbers of followers but you need to know how to gather targeted followers who will engage with you, rather than anyone who will follow you but might not be remotely interested in what you are offering, whereas Facebook can be more difficult and require more effort from you.
However, with most sites there comes a point where once the initial effort has been made there is a tipping point – that magic number is often 1000 – and after that number is reached it becomes much easier because you are more visible in news feeds and people tend to find you easier – but make no mistake effort is required to get to this point.

Become an authority

In order to be perceived as an authority you need to walk the walk – by that I mean not just telling people what they should be doing, but demonstrating that you are actually practicing what you preach.
So make sure your website looks good, has testimonials, capture options, social icons, and reflects the fact that you are the expert in your particular niche.
Make sure your Facebook page looks the part, and all your other social sites too.
Couple this with relevant, interesting content and you are well on your way to that position of authority.

Ask and answer questions

Social Media should be interactive, so you should be constantly asking and answering questions.
You can for example, go to Twitter and do a search for certain keywords and find people who are asking questions about your particular area of expertise, and answer them.
On LinkedIn you can participate in LinkedIn answers, another good way to establish your authority.
On Facebook you could start a group or have a Q and A session on your page.
You could create a poll on your blog to generate opinion.
Generally, on Social Media, ask questions in your updates to generate response and interaction, and actively seek out questions to answer.

Don’t sell

OK so if you cannot sell on Social Media, what is the point of it? Are we wasting our time and what is the ROI?
ROI measured directly is often disappointing, but indirectly Social Media benefits are enormous.
You are building awareness of your brand, and getting the attention of your prospects.
You are gradually establishing trust, without which people will not buy from you.
You are proving that you are the expert and the best business to buy from.
So that is why many people give up on Social Media, because it is a long term strategy, which takes not only time but effort and persistence.
But put that effort in, and be consistent and persistent and it will pay off.

Be personal, just not too personal

Yes the word Social in Social Media does suggest an informal and relaxed approach, but how personal should you be in your posting strategy?
When tweeting and posting for your business, you should always be aware of the impression you are creating on your potential clients.
Yes, it is good to let them know the person behind the business, and let them know certain things about you and your life.
But just be aware of the impact of your comments – do not give too much personal information and what you do give try to relate it back to your business in a positive way.
For instance consider the potential impact of these 2 posts, which are essentially conveying the same message, but in very different ways.

‘Looking forward to a relaxing weekend unwinding with family over a nice meal and lovely bottle of wine, after a really busy and challenging working week – what are your plans for the weekend?’

‘Cannot wait for 5pm – going to go out and have a glass of wine or probably the whole bottle and more, because I have had a really horrible week at work with nothing but problems and complaints.’

Yes of course this is light hearted but serves to illustrate my point – which is think about the impact of your words before you write them!
